Hands-On AWS Skills Without Breaking the Bank: My Cloud Journey So Far
I’m immensely grateful for the free and affordable hands-on resources available to learn AWS. Influencers like Network Chuck have provided invaluable content, while AWS itself offers numerous programs to help build cloud skills that are on the job applicable to drive improvements and innovation.
While I believe in the value of certification exams—especially hands-on ones that include simulations—I didn’t start with one. Certifications like those from AWS, which are updated regularly to reflect the latest services and deprecations, help ensure you stay current. If you are looking to get certified, AWS right now offers 50% discount vouchers for certifications via the Get AWS Certified: Associate Challenge before December 12th 2024.
However, when I landed my first cloud job requiring familiarity with AWS services, I wasn't yet certified. Instead, I relied on resources like the AWS CloudUp for Her program and live online workshops available on AWS Solutions-Focused Immersion Days and AWS Activation Days. These workshops boosted my confidence, allowing me to demonstrate during job interviews that I was eager to stay in-the-know, capable of applying knowledge, and passionate about enabling and motivating others.
The Power of AWS Hands-On Events
AWS live online workshops, such as the Web Application Protection workshop at the time, can last up to a few hours, during which instructors lay out a problem, AWS Infrastructure that will be used to resolve this problem, and guide you through used services and their configurations. Most workshops also include access to a sandboxed AWS account, typically lasting a few days, allowing participants to gain hands-on experience without the risk of unexpected charges or misconfigurations in their own accounts.
These workshops also offer an incredible opportunity to network. Instructors are often AWS employees, partners, or AWS Heroes, and connections made during these sessions can spark ideas, provide support, and open doors to future opportunities.
The 100-Hour Rule and Long-Term Upskilling
By the time I achieved my two AWS certifications, I had gone well beyond the 100-hour rule, which posits that 100 hours of active focused learning can make you more skilled and confident than most beginners are. Upskilling in cloud technology is a long-term journey and, while consistency is key, it’s important to adapt to your own schedule and capacity, document your learning journey, and show your work—share your unique perspective with others.
Documenting progress is crucial. As AWS offering evolves, keeping a record of your journey helps you stay current and provides a portfolio of your work. Sharing your experiences through platforms like LinkedIn or other channels ensures your insights connect you with the right people.
Becoming an AWS Community Builder
In January 2024, inspired by a video from Linda Vivah, I applied to the AWS Community Builders (CB) program. Applications were open until EOD January 28th, and by March 4th I received an acceptance email, woo-hoo!
The program provides access to an exclusive Slack community, year-one swag, a year’s subscription to Cloud Academy, an AWS certification voucher, cloud credits, and more. An additional benefit I've heard of is the AWS New Voices program, which helps participants practice public speaking and structure impactful talks, somewhat like online Toastmasters for the AWS CB Community :) Mark Pergola’s blog offers valuable insights into maximizing the impact of your talks. Also, keep in mind that benefits may change over time.
Speaking at AWS Community Day
Later in the year, I saw a call for speakers for AWS Community Day Adria happening in Montenegro and, inspired by the beginnings of my own journey :) , I submitted a talk titled "How to Get Into Cloud Engineering with Hands-on Resources Without Going Bankrupt (2024 Edition)".
The Dale’s Cone of Experience explains how immersive learning experience helps with memory retention, and I would add - confidence building, enabling you to apply to sought-after higher-paying and more senior positions. My talk highlighted affordable ways to gain hands-on AWS experience, resources to get your resume ATS-ready, and prepare for job interviews. You can access the slides here or watch the accompanying YouTube Short.
Key AWS Resources
From what's in the slides and not already mentioned above, here are some of the most helpful AWS programs for networking and kickstarting the AWS journey hands-on:
- AWS Communities and User Groups - find and join your closest ones!
- AWS Educate and Emerging Talent Community (ETC)
- AWS Cloud Quest: Cloud Practitioner
- AWS Experience AMER and EMEA workshops
For students, the AWS Cloud Club program is an excellent way to build leadership skills and stand out in the job market. Applications open again in January 2025.
Final Thoughts
Upskilling with AWS has been transformative, opening doors I never expected during my college years. Surround yourself with like-minded individuals, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to document and share your journey. The right community can motivate and propel you to new heights 🚀
Keep learning, applying, and stay connected!
